Justice League: War Is A War On My Senses
First things first…
They recast Nathan Fillion in this movie, and that is unforgiveable.
Now, what do I actually think?
Justice League: War is very odd in the things it decides to focus on as well as the way it portrays some characters. Half off the male JL members spend their time trying to impress Wonder Woman, while also telling the audience that Superman and her will become an item. It all comes off as rather…uncomfortable. Which is how Wonder Woman and Superman make me feel when watching this. Both appear to be borderline psychopaths, Superman moreso. Superman spends half his time on screen causing extreme amounts of damage, caring little for civilian life and just overall being kind of an ass.
Wonder Woman isn’t calm and collected like she tends to be portrayed. She swings her sword around constantly and just sort of disrespects most people. Which is the opposite of her. They also try to turn up the fish out of water aspect and it comes across as tacky more than anything.
This movie is essentially a Green Lantern movie. He is the character with the biggest growth. At least his is focused on the most. Which makes it even more noticeable that they decided not to have Nathan Fillion portray Hal Jordan in this movie. Either way, the movie’s main character focus is on Hal. The real Justice League part just comes from the fact that the Justice League happens to be in it.
That said, the focus on characters in this movie was so vastly different between characters. Green Lantern and Batman got extreme amounts of characterization, while newcomers like Shazam were left by the wayside for the most part. Cyborg is in some odd place in the middle. He had great character moments, but just sort of fell off in the back half of the movie.
The film feels misjointed in parts, but serves as a decent opening to the universe. The character interactions were probably the best part of the movie. The villain might have been the worst part. Darkseid is just boring in this. There’s nothing to him beyond a hulking mass.
Could it have been better? Yes. Does it serves its purpose? Yeah, I guess it does.
